Auto Insurance Guide

Posted on August 4th, 2008 by by CarPlanet

Auto insurance is insurance that can be purchased on all types of road vehicles including cars, motorbikes, vans and lorries. It protects drivers both financially and legally in the result of traffic accidents and is compulsory in most countries.

Auto Insurances’ primary use is to provide protection against financial losses incurred as a result of traffic accidents, and also to protect against any liability that could be taken against the driver. Some countries such as South Australia include Third Party Insurance in all license registration fees, ensuring that all drivers are covered by the minimum insurance required. South Africa has a policy which allocates a percentage of profits made on petrol to a ‘Road Accident Fund’ which compensates third parties in the event of an accident on a public road.

There are two main types of insurance policies you can take out on your vehicles.

1) Third Party Insurance, or Liability insurance, is usually the minimum legal requirement for auto insurance, and will cover the driver against liability, which they may incur to another person/vehicle. This type of insurance will only pay out for the damage you do to a third party – you cannot claim any damages to your own vehicle.
2) Comprehensive Insurance – these policies vary in content, but basically are designed to cover a wide range of situations and risks to your vehicle. These policies will pay out for damages to both third parties, and your own vehicle in the event of an accident.

If you are insuring a van, you will need to consider taking out a commercial rather than private policy, especially if you are using the van to run a business. This will cover your for a higher level of liability, which is a necessary requirement for commercial enterprises. If you are just hiring a van for a few days for a private job, then you can get temporary van insurance for a max of 28 days from most leading insurance companies and the hire company should be able to advise you of this further.

Also if you own a RV for recreational camping and leisure activities you will need to take out a specialised insurance policy. This will cover you whilst your vehicle is travelling on the road, and also when it is stationary either parked outside your home or on holiday. RV Insurance policies vary, but should include road side assistance in the event of breakdowns, full contents insurance for your belongings and equipment, vacation liability, and the usual fire, theft and flood cover.

It was not easy to get car insurance quotes previously. In older days, people has to browse various company websites and fill out separate forms for getting quotes – so was tedious. But now, you can compare auto insurance quotes from across top 40 UK insurance companies at QuoteZone insurance. You are just required to fill one simple form and get results real time. Recently they have added extra features of getting home insurance and van insurance quotes too. :)

2009 BMW 3 Series

Posted on July 14th, 2008 by by CarPlanet

The new Euro-spec 2009 BMW 3 Series is now out, sporting a face lifted front fascia, and restyled hood, mirrors and tail lights. The over all changes may not be exactly radical, but what has been done is good, and the new model makes many subtle improvements on the 2008 release. The electronics packages are high spec, and the new 3 Series is equipped with BMW’s iDrive system in-car Internet with an 80-gig hard drive, that will provide entertainment, navigation and communication functions.

Safety features are similar to the 2008 model with ABS, traction control, antiskid system, and front side airbags all as standard. Rollover bars that are designed to deploy from the rear headsets if sensors detect an impending tip are standard on the convertible models. All models have run-flat tires, and all except convertibles have a sunroof.

The interior of the 2009 3 Series is subtle as the exterior, with a clean uncluttered look, and the iDrive system more neatly integrated into the dash board than it has been in previous models. Leather upholstery is standard on convertible 335i models, and optional for all the other 335s.

The sedan and wagon versions are available with 6-speed manual or automatic transmissions. The 318 and 320 models have 2.0L four-cylinders engines, while the 325, 330, and 335 cars have 3.0L inline-sixes, which provide excellent power delivery and responsiveness. The 3 Series has always been the class benchmark for overall control and steering feel, and with the 2009 model things haven’t changed. Even the standard suspension provides excellent balance and turning, which is made even sharper on the upgraded sport suspension. Optional Active Steering improves low speed maneuverability and feels precise and responsive. As with most BMW’s, braking is powerful and stable.

The new 2009 3 Series is a  car and base prices are reasonable for the luxury car market. The design and look of the car are subtle for a modern BMW, and the variety of body styles available and all-wheel drive options will broaden the appeal of this series. The 3 Series remains the benchmark for overall control and steering, and sheer drivability.

2009 Chevrolet Traverse

Posted on July 5th, 2008 by by CarPlanet

The new 2009 Chevrolet Traverse has now been unveiled, the fourth evolution of the Chevrolet’s Lambda platform crossover designs. The 2009 Traverse is a full-size vehicle, with seating for seven or eight-passenger (depending on model).

The exterior design of the new Traverse is a little more aggressive than previous models, with the big twin-port grill and jewel-head lamps providing a smooth and edgy frontage. The LTZ model has 20-inch wheels as standard providing a grounded and solid look. All the models are also available with sunroofs.

The interior of the Traverse is of a premium quality, with smart heated and cooled bucket seats standard in the LTZ model. The dashboard continues the edgy look with a sweeping cock pit design, and although the quality of the plastics is not quite high spec, the Traverse is spacious and functional.
Safety features for the 2009 model include six air bags with rollover sensor, electronic stability control system and enhanced visibility side view mirrors on 1LT, 2LT and LTZ models. Ultrasonic Rear Parking Assist is also standard on these models, and a power-remote lift gate on the LTZ only.

Driving the new 2009 Traverse reveals a dynamic and responsive ride. The new 3.6L VVT V6 engine provides more mid-range torque without compromising fuel consumption, and the suspension has been re-tuned and feels lighter and more stable through the corners with minimal body roll. Steering is reasonably responsive for such a big vehicle, and the low speed maneuverability is comparably good amongst its competitors.

Overall the enhanced engine and suspension of the 2009 Traverse is a marked improvement on previous models, providing a superior driving experience to most of the alternatives currently on the market. For such a large and heavy vehicle the Traverse is a surprisingly dynamic drive, providing responsive and stable handling, and good mid range torque, which will provide continuous power, even whilst towing. The styling is nothing radical, but is solid and sturdy and the interior provides a good sense of space. :)

Sony MEXR1 Car DVD Player Review

Posted on July 4th, 2008 by by CarPlanet

There are lots of car music players available in the market and it becomes difficult to select the best out of them for newbies like me. Sony, Pioneer, Blaupunkt, Alpine, Clarion, Panasonic, Kenwood, JVC, Eonon are some of the top music-player manufacturing companies – out of them Sony seems to be hot and favorite. And last month I went with Sony MEXR1 Car DVD player for my new Toyota kluger. Let me give you a small product review about Sony MEXR1 :

This is a Multi-disc player from sony xplod. It supports formats like DVD±R/RW, MP3, JPEG, VCD etc. A single DVD±R/RW can store as many as 1000 mp3 tracks. It can also play a data disc. It also comes with the new Zone x Zone feature – the front seat passengers can playback DVDs while rear passengers can watch their favorite CDs with headphone. That lessen fights in our family.

Its has a sleek , synchro flip black-colored panel design and comes with new drvie-s HX technology. IT has 4 x 52 watt S-MOSFET and a 24 bit D/A converter. There is a small but easy-to-ready display for CD-Text display/scroll. You can also watch your favorite photos with mp3 mix mode, also supports multi session playback. ID3 tag v2.4 is supported for mp3 playback. Comes with a digital syntheses tuner with FM18/AM12 preset list.

The music quality is excellent as always, amps are great and RCAs are state of the art. Various other features are :

  • Zone x Zone audio out
  • Video out
  • Digital 5.1 out
  • 1 sub out
